LET YOUR CHILDREN BREATHE

📌 Parents, it’s been 2 weeks since school closed. And I have one sincere question for you. When you saw your child’s result, what did you focus on the percentage or the position? 🤔Now, let me define it not just as a parent, but as an educator who has spent over 10 years in the classroom, watching how results are interpreted and how it affects children.🔹 Position tells you where your child stands compared to others🔹 Percentage tells you how much your child actually understood. Picture this with me.Three students. All came 1st in their classes. But look at their percentages:👧🏽 Student A — 1st Position, 57%👦🏾 Student B — 1st Position, 76%👦🏽 Student C — 1st Position, 94%Now tell me, as a parent.Should we clap the same way for all three, just because they all came 1st?This is exactly why focusing only on position can be misleading.Let me tell you what happens when we focus only on position?❌️Children start to believe their worth is tied to being “better than others”❌️A child with 85% who came 5th goes home sad, because no one celebrated them❌️A child with 58% who came 1st gets over-praised even though they are struggling❌️Some children begin to fear results instead of learning from them❌️Others start hiding mistakes or even cheating, just to maintain their positionâś… But when we focus on percentage and even deeper, on progress:We celebrate real learningWe identify where our child needs supportWe encourage effort, not just outcomeWe raise children who are not afraid to try againAnd we remind them: “You don’t need to be 1st to be excellent.” So, dear parents, this holiday ,I want you to go back to that result slip and Look beyond the position.✔️ Check the percentage✔️ Read the teacher’s comments they hold clues to how your child behaves, learns, and interacts.✔️ Look at each subject where did they shine? Where did they struggle?✔️ Compare with their last term’s performance did they improve? Ask your child the right questions:“What did you enjoy learning the most this term?”“What subject gave you a tough time?”“Which part of your result are you proud of?”“Is there any topic you want us to go over together before next term?”These questions do more than you think. They show your child that you care about their journey, not just their ranking.Let’s raise confident learners. Let’s raise children who are growing not just competing. Let’s teach them that excellence is personal and progress is powerful”Written by ©️ Oyindamola Okeshola Adekunle .
